Commonwealth War Graves Commission Marks Centenary

A minute's silence to remember the victims of the Manchester attack was held before a Service of Thanksgiving to Celebrate the Centenary of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at Westminster Abbey on 23rd May. HRH The Duke of Kent attended the service.

Henry III manuscripts go on display in the Galleries

Two 13th century manuscripts go on display in our Galleries as part of celebrations to mark the 750th anniversary of the rebuilding of the church.

Charles I
Charles I was the second son of James I and was born on 19th November 1600. He was crowned in Westminster Abbey in February 1626.

Princess Mary, daughter of George V
Princess Mary was the only daughter of George V and Queen Mary. On 28th February 1922 she married Henry, Viscount Lascelles in Westminster Abbey.

George, Duke of Kent, son of George V

On 29th November 1934, George Edward, Duke of Kent, married Princess Marina, daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark, in Westminster Abbey.

Marie of Savoy, Queen of France
In 1810 Marie Josephine Louise de Savoy was buried in a vault in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey. Her body was moved to Sardinia in 1811.

In the west cloister is the grave of Sidney Robert Andrews, his son and his wife. He was Clerk of Works at the Abbey.

Sir William Stonor, soldier, died in 1494 and was buried in the old Lady Chapel (this chapel was taken down after his burial).

Frances Gower, only daughter of Sir Thomas Gower (died 1672), 2nd Baronet of Stittenham in Yorkshire, was buried in the north quire aisle in 1698.
